Karsten Rødder’s life in America began at the age of fourteen when he was formally discharged from a state-run reformatory school where he had lived during two separate periods. Soon after, he joined a ship’s crew and left both his family and his hometown of Stavanger behind. When the vessel reached the East Coast of the United States, he jumped ship – and never returned. That decision marked the start of fifty years in the United States. He pursued an education and later worked as a journalist and editor for Nordisk Tidende in New York.
