Martin Wølstad – A Klondike Gold Prospector

What would make a young man — just sixteen years old — leave his parents, siblings, and home to venture out into the world? As part of Migration Year 2025, we share the story of Ole Martin Vølstad, a farmer’s son from Tasta near Stavanger, who became a Klondike gold prospector in Canada. During his time abroad, he Americanized his name to Martin Wolstad. When he returned to Norway as a Norwegian-American, he was known as Martin Wølstad.
